Q: How long has the choir been in existence?
A: Choir of the Sound was formed in 1977, making the 2015-16 season our thirty-ninth year!
Q: Who is the group’s director?
A. Jeremy Matheis has been the artistic director of Choir of the Sound since 2011. The group’s original director, Robert Metzger, led the choir from 1977 to 2004; Judy Filibeck led the group from 2004 to 2011.
Q: When are rehearsals held?
A: Weekly rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:45 PM at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church. The group also meets on Saturdays twice a quarter in Mountlake Terrace for all-day rehearsals. There is also a mandatory weekend retreat held every year in January. Choir members are allowed to miss three rehearsals per quarter, no questions asked.
Q: How many shows does Choir of the Sound perform?
A: The choir performs three major sets of shows a year, a Holiday show in December, a Winter concert in March, and a Pops show in early June. The group occasionally collaborates with other local groups on joint performances, such as the 2015 performance of Carmina Burana at Benaroya Hall.
Q: What days does Choir of the Sound perform?
A: Our holiday and spring shows traditionally are on Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon. Our winter concert has one evening performance and one afternoon performance, either Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday.
Q: Are there any opportunities for solos within the group?
A: There are solo and dance opportunities. Auditions for solos are held early in the quarter. Dances require extra rehearsals.
Q: Is all your music memorized?
A: Music for our holiday and pops is mostly memorized. Music usually is not memorized for our annual winter concert.
Q: What venues do you perform at?
A: Performances usually take place at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center in Shoreline and Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. From time to time the choir performs at other venues, such as the Argosy Christmas Ships for the holidays, and at sporting events.
Q: How can I audition to be part of the choir?
A: Auditions are held in July. If you are interested in becoming part of the choir, please email auditions@choirofthesound.org or call 206-528-9990.
Q: How much does it cost to be in Choir of the Sound?
A: Dues are $50 per quarter, so roughly $150 in dues to participate in the holiday, winter, and spring pops show. Choir members must also cover the cost of the music, roughly $30-40 per quarter. Choir members keep their music after each quarter.
